What does Kieferfreund entail?

Jaw issues are often complex. The Kieferfreund program therefore offers a holistic approach. Helping to improve the root causes: tongue posture, nose breathing, and muscular balance. Additionally, it supports nervous system and emotional regulation through mindfulness practices, which are scientifically proven to assist with stress-related conditions.
Depending on the product you choose, Kieferfreund offers:
- Kieferfreund App: Includes the app (our online platform) and email support to guide you through the program with technical support.
- Kieferfreund Premium: The app plus additional tools such as a fascia roller and patented tongue trainer for deeper jaw tension relief and sustainable results. Our ‘DIY’ (Do-It-Yourself) solution.

How long does the Kieferfreund training take?
On average, the Kieferfreund training takes 21 days and involves dedicating 30 minutes per day to improving your jaw health. The program is designed for quick results through a combination of jaw exercises and mindfulness to target issues like bruxism, jaw clenching, and TMJ pain.
Here’s the breakdown:
- 10 minutes of targeted exercises for the jaw, mouth, and face.
- 20 minutes of mindfulness audio training, focused on tongue posture, nose breathing, and sleep support.
For individuals with more complex or long-standing jaw issues, such as chronic teeth grinding or TMJ disorders, more time may be required. To support ongoing progress, we provide a 1-year license that can be renewed as needed. The training can be repeated after 21 days, allowing users to continue improving and maintaining long-term results.
Why does the training take 21 days on average?
Research on habit formation, including studies by Dr. Phillippa Lally, suggests that it can take as little as 3 weeks to form new habits. The Kieferfreund program is designed around this timeframe to help you establish lasting behaviors like improving tongue posture, reducing jaw clenching and teeth grinding, and supporting nose breathing. The mindfulness audio training supports you through the process, ensuring effective, long-term results.

Is Kieferfreund an app or online course?
Kieferfreund originally started as a traditional app, but in 2023, we took an exciting step to leave the app store and become an independent, browser-based platform.
This move allows users to log in from any device (even their desktop or TV!) – using just a single email and password. Our shift to this platform was driven by the goal of improving accessibility across devices and optimizing the training experience based on the feedback we’ve gathered from users over the past 8 years.
For those who prefer the convenience of an app-like experience, users can easily create a shortcut icon that will allow them to open the platform directly from their phone’s home screen, just like an app. Guidance on how to do this is provided within the platform.
Additionally, the meditation add-on still offers the option to listen to meditations even without an active internet connection, perfect for those who prefer to be without Wi-Fi during the night.
By transitioning to a browser-based platform, we now have the flexibility to incorporate improvements and user feedback instantly, without being held up by app store requirements. This ensures we can continue to deliver quick results and adapt to our users’ needs, focusing on the most effective guidance for tongue posture, jaw exercises, and mindfulness to improve jaw health and reduce issues like teeth grinding, jaw clenching, and TMJ pain.
What science is Kieferfreund based on?
Kieferfreund is grounded in the principles of myofunctional therapy and mindfulness, supported by significant scientific research.
Myofunctional therapy involves retraining the muscles of the face, mouth, and tongue to improve functions like tongue posture, breathing, and jaw movement. This therapy is commonly used to effectively treat conditions like TMJ disorders and bruxism.
The Leeds University TMD study demonstrated that self-management strategies, including exercises, can be highly effective in reducing orofacial pain and improving outcomes for individuals with jaw issues such as TMD (Fallowfield et al., 2019).
The Kieferfreund program builds on these principles by empowering users to take control of their jaw health through structured home exercises. In an independent study using the Kieferfreund app, significant improvements were observed in pain reduction, with 67% of participants successfully retraining their tongue resting position, leading to reduced jaw tension. (Study available upon request).
Mindfulness, studied extensively at institutions such as Harvard University and Oxford University, has been shown to reduce stress and help regulate the nervous system, which is crucial in managing conditions like jaw clenching and teeth grinding (Cheung et al., 2019; Maloney et al., 2023).
By combining these approaches, Kieferfreund offers a holistic, evidence-based program to support and improve your jaw health.

Can I also buy the Kieferfreund Roller separately?
The Kieferfreund Fascia Roller is an essential part of our holistic approach and works best when used in combination with the guided exercises and instructions provided in the Kieferfreund program. The roller adds significant value by helping to release jaw tension, promote fascia relaxation, and complement the exercises aimed at reducing TMJ pain and jaw clenching.
While it is not available for separate purchase, you can start with the app alone and upgrade to Kieferfreund Premium or Kieferfreund Gold at a later time. These versions include the roller along with additional tools to help with jaw tension relief, jaw exercises, and improving tongue posture. We also offer a discount to account for your initial app purchase when upgrading.
Can I also buy the Kieferfreund Trainer separately?
The Kieferfreund Trainer is designed to help you learn and test the correct tongue resting position as part of the Kieferfreund program. It is only available in combination with the Kieferfreund App and the Kieferfreund Fascia Roller. Having the trainer is a worthwhile investment, as it optimizes your training results by ensuring proper tongue posture, which is crucial for effective jaw tension relief and improving jaw function.
You can start with the app alone and upgrade to Kieferfreund Premium or Kieferfreund Gold at a later time. These versions include the trainer, roller, and additional tools to support jaw exercises, tongue posture, and overall jaw health. We also offer a discount to account for your initial app purchase when upgrading.
Are the Kieferfreund tools essential for success?
The Kieferfreund tools, like the Fascia Roller and Trainer, add to the program’s effectiveness, but they’re not strictly necessary for success. The core of Kieferfreund is the program itself, which offers detailed guidance on exercises, mindfulness practices, and techniques to improve tongue posture, relieve jaw tension, and manage issues like bruxism and TMJ pain.
In fact, we’ve received numerous user reviews from individuals who have achieved great results just by following the app. Many have found significant improvements in their symptoms and overall jaw health without the tools. However, if you choose to incorporate the tools, they can enhance your experience by providing support for learning the tongue resting position, restoring balance in jaw muscles, and promoting relaxation. Ultimately, the decision to use the Kieferfreund tools depends on your personal goals.
Can I also book an online consultation later on?
Yes! Kieferfreund offers flexible upgrades, including the option to book an online consultation at any time. Whether you need additional guidance on managing bruxism, jaw clenching, or improving your tongue posture, our professional support is always available to help. We believe in providing ongoing support, ensuring you get the best results from our holistic approach.
Please note that online consultations are arranged directly with our Founder and myofunctional therapist, Julia Reindl, a holistic jaw health expert. These consultations are not booked through our shop. For further information, please visit juliareindl.com/en/ or jaw-yoga.com/en/.
Who is Kieferfreund suitable for?
Kieferfreund is designed for users of all ages. Both adults and children use the same platform—our latest Kieferfreund 2023 version, which provides comprehensive support for bruxism treatment, jaw clenching, teeth grinding, and TMJ pain.
For younger children, ages 5 to 12, we offer a Junior add-on that provides extra videos and guidance tailored specifically to their needs. Adults can train together with children and supervise them as they follow along. The Junior add-on also includes a special kids’ meditation and song, making the training engaging and fun for both young and older users, while helping to improve tongue posture and support overall jaw health.
For considerations regarding specific conditions or devices, such as mouthguards or CPAP machines, please refer to other FAQ items. It’s important for all users to consult with their dentist or healthcare professional to determine if Kieferfreund is suitable for their individual treatment plan.
Our focus has always been to create a program that is accessible to as many people as possible, allowing them to begin their journey to jaw health from the comfort of their home. By avoiding long waiting lists and reducing therapy costs, users can start bringing balance back to their jaw and improving their overall well-being right away.
Can I upgrade and buy the tools later?
Absolutely – you can start with the app alone and upgrade to Kieferfreund Premium or Kieferfreund Gold at a later time. These versions include the trainer, roller, and additional tools to support jaw exercises, tongue posture, and overall jaw health. We also offer a discount to account for your initial app purchase when upgrading.
The upgrade link and discount code can be found at the end of the introduction section within the Kieferfreund program.
I suffer from snoring and have problems with teeth grinding, which version should I choose?
To effectively address your concerns, we recommend starting with the Kieferfreund 2023 program, which is specifically designed for managing teeth grinding, jaw clenching, and related issues like TMJ pain. This program offers a comprehensive approach to bruxism treatment, including jaw exercises, mindfulness techniques, and strategies to promote relaxation and restore balance in jaw muscles.
In addition, we recommend incorporating the NoSnore add-on to address your snoring. This add-on focuses on educating users about the causes of snoring and emphasizes improving nose breathing and tongue posture, which are crucial for effectively reducing snoring. Since all our programs are grounded in the same myofunctional science method, using the Kieferfreund 2023 program alongside the NoSnore add-on will not negatively impact your ability to manage teeth grinding.
This combined approach allows you to tackle both snoring and teeth grinding effectively while benefiting from a unified training system that supports your overall jaw health.
I suffer from sleep apnea - will this help me?
A number of users have turned to Kieferfreund to help with sleep apnea. While Kieferfreund is specifically designed to address teeth grinding, jaw clenching (“gritting teeth”), and TMJ disorders, there is an overlap in addressing some common root causes for these conditions.
For those with sleep apnea, incorporating the NoSnore add-on into your training can be beneficial. This add-on supports users in adopting the correct tongue resting position and improving nose breathing habits, both of which can help alleviate symptoms related to sleep apnea.
However, it’s important to note that we currently don’t have enough data to draw conclusions regarding Kieferfreund’s effectiveness for sleep apnea. We recommend consulting with your healthcare professional to determine the best approach for your individual needs.
Which specifications does my device need in order to carry out the training?
Kieferfreund is designed for accessibility and can be operated on any device, including smartphones, tablets, notebooks, desktops, and even your TV! This flexibility ensures that you can engage in your training program from the comfort of your home or on the go.
To ensure the best experience, we recommend using a device with the following specifications:
- Operating System: Up-to-date versions of iOS, Android, Windows, or macOS.
- Browser Compatibility: The latest versions of popular web browsers such as Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Edge.
- Internet Connection: A stable internet connection is necessary for streaming video content and accessing all features of the program.
With these specifications, you can fully benefit from the Kieferfreund program, including exercises designed to alleviate jaw pain, relieve jaw tension, improve tongue posture, and support overall jaw health. Whether you’re managing teeth grinding, jaw clenching, or addressing TMJ pain, Kieferfreund offers comprehensive resources to enhance your well-being in an accessible way on almost any device and multiple devices!

I find it very tiring to adopt the correct tongue resting position. Is this normal?
I constantly think about my tongue- is this normal?
It feels as if my teeth no longer properly fit on each other?
Adopting the correct tongue resting position leads your masticatory muscles to relax, which, in turn, affects your entire ‘mouth-jaw-face system’. It is therefore possible, that your ‘bite’ feels slightly different than usual. This is a normal reaction. If in doubt, or if you experience pain, please contact your doctor or contact us.
My tongue always falls back into its habitual position, is this normal?
How do I know if I am adopting the correct tongue resting position?
How do I know whether I am now automatically adopting the correct tongue resting position?
My jaw and tongue feel tense after the training exercises. Why is this the case?
Just like any other muscle training, exercising the tongue and jaw muscles can lead to sore or overexerted muscles. Please note that the training exercises should not be painful! If you experience sore or overexerted jaw and/or tongue muscles, please reduce the number of times you are repeating the exercises, for a two day period.
Can I listen to the Mindfulness Audio training for more than 21 days?
Do the daily practices need to be carried out in front of a mirror?
Please note...
Please note that Kieferfreund products (App, Trainer) complement therapy and medical treatments and should never be viewed as a replacement of these. We don’t make a diagnosis or promises of a cure. If in doubt, please consult your doctor or therapist.
