FAQ

Here you find frequently asked questions:

What does Kieferfreund entail?
Kieferfreund is a comprehensive, scientifically grounded method which has been developed in close corporation with medical experts. Depending on the version, Kieferfreund includes an app and email support (Kieferfreund), an app, email support and the trainer (Kieferfreund Plus) or an app, email support, the trainer and a personal online consultation (Kieferfreund Professional).
Can I buy the trainer or online one-to-sessions at a later time?

Yes, we offer upgrades for the trainer and one-to-one sessions.

What versions of the Kieferfreund App are there?
Currently, we offer 4 versions: NoGrind- App for teeth grinding, NoSnore-App for snoring, Ortho- App for those with braces and Junior-App for children.
What are the differences between the different App versions?
The Apps are tailored to the varying needs of our users, so that there are differences in content and training exercises.
I suffer from snoring and have problems with teeth grinding, which version should I choose?
We recommend that you initially address the problem that negatively impacts your life the most. For example, if you are affected by your snoring but are not consciously aware of your teeth grinding, we would recommend that you start with our NoSnore App. As all our apps are grounded in the same method, nothing would suggest that the content of the NoSnore App would have negative impacts on, e.g. teeth grinding.
Who is Kieferfreund suitable for?
The Kieferfreund trainer is suitable for adolescents from the age of 13 as well as adults. Our Junior App is specifically geared towards the special needs of children between the ages of 5 and 12.
Which specifications does my device need in order to carry out the training?
You would require a smartphone/tablet with an Android operating system (version 4.2 or above) or an IPhone/IPad (Apple iOS). Kieferfreund cannot be operated from a computer or laptop.
Where can I download the Kieferfreund App?
The Kieferfreund App can be found in the Google Android PlayStore and in the Apple store when you search for ‘Kieferfreund’. After you have downloaded the App, please make sure to enter your activation code to receive the full version.
How long does the Kieferfreund training take?
On average, the training takes 21 days and involves dedicating 30 minutes per day to your health. It comprises special training exercises for your tongue, jaw- and mouth muscles, plus a Mindfulness audio training, which you can listen to every night before going to sleep.
Can I use Kieferfreund when wearing a dental splint?

Yes, Kieferfreund can complement dental splint therapy, as you learn to adopt a relaxed jaw position at night, without biting on your dental splint. Please consult your doctor/dentist first. Kieferfreund is not a replacement for therapeutic or medical treatment.

Can I use Kieferfreund if I wear a breathing mask/am undergoing CPAP therapy?

Yes, Kieferfreund can complement CPAP therapy. Please consult your doctor/dentist first. Kieferfreund is not a replacement for therapeutic or medical treatment.

I pre-dominantly breathe through my mouth, can Kieferfreund help me to learn to breathe through my nose?
Before starting with the Kieferfreund programme, we recommend that you book a consultation with an ENT (ear, nose and throat) doctor. It is important that you get enough oxygen through your nose. If you normally breathe through your mouth, Kieferfreund can help you to adopt healthy breathing through the nose.
Can I use Kieferfreund when wearing braces?
Yes, you can use Kieferfreund at the same time as an orthodontic treatment, as you only have to wear the trainer for learning and testing, for approximately 2 minutes per day. We would recommend the Ortho-App. However, a palatal arch and braces, which cover the palate, make it more difficult to learn and adopt the correct tongue position. In this case, it would be beneficial to speak to your orthodontist.
Can I use Kieferfreund when wearing a dental prosthesis?

Yes, you can use Kieferfreund if your prosthesis fits tightly. If in doubt, please contact your doctor/dentist.

I find it very tiring to adopt the correct tongue resting position. Is this normal?

Adopting the correct tongue resting position can be tiring at the beginning, as your tongue muscles are still weak. The more you practice, the more effortless it will become, as, once your tongue muscles are strengthened, the tongue requires no strength to remain in the correct resting position.

I constantly think about my tongue- is this normal?

This is a good sign and shows that you are starting to gain consciousness of your tongue’s position. Any change firstly requires a great deal of consciousness. This means that you are starting to learn the correct tongue resting position.

It feels as if my teeth no longer properly fit on each other?

Adopting the correct tongue resting position leads your masticatory muscles to relax, which, in turn, affects your entire ‘mouth-jaw-face system’. It is therefore possible, that your ‘bite’ feels slightly different than usual. This is a normal reaction. If in doubt, or if you experience pain, please contact your doctor or contact us.

My tongue always falls back into its habitual position, is this normal?

If your tongue falls back into its habitual position, solely acknowledge this and then adopt the correct tongue resting position again. Change takes time!

How do I know if I am adopting the correct tongue resting position?

Your tongue resting position is correct if you can feel all of the three tactile points on the trainer between your palate and tongue. It is important to pay attention to the rear part of your tongue, which is often weak and sags.

How do I know whether I am now automatically adopting the correct tongue resting position?

When you wake up in the morning, pay close attention to your tongue. If you find it in the correct position, then we would like to say ‘congratulations’.

My jaw and tongue feel tense after the training exercises. Why is this the case?

Just like any other muscle training, exercising the tongue and jaw muscles can lead to sore or overexerted muscles. Please note that the training exercises should be painful!  If you experience sore or overexerted jaw and/or tongue muscles, please reduce the number of times you are repeating the exercises, for a two day period.

Why does the training take 21 days on average?

Scientific evidence has revealed that the human brain requires 21 days to learn a new habit. The mental audio training supports you throughout this process.

Do I need to listen to the Mindfulness Audio training in the evening?
In order to achieve optimal results, we recommend that the mental audio training is carried out before going to sleep. Of course, if you prefer, you could also listen to it during the day. Attention: Never listen it when driving or operating machinery, as the audio training leads to mental and bodily relaxation.
Can I listen to the Mindfulness Audio training for more than 21 days?
Yes, many of our users employ the audio training for a longer period of time.
Do the daily practices need to be carried out in front of a mirror?

Yes, we recommend that you carry these out in front of the mirror, so that you can see and control your movements.

Please note...

Please note that Kieferfreund products (App, Trainer) complement therapy and medical treatments and should never be viewed as a replacement of these. We don’t make a diagnosis or promises of a cure.  If in doubt, please consult your doctor or therapist.
