Myofunctional Therapy for Jaw Pain: Exercises, Benefits & How to Start

A natural, science-backed approach to jaw health and long-term relief.

What Is Myofunctional Therapy?

Myofunctional therapy is a series of targeted exercises designed to retrain the muscles of the tongue, face, and jaw. It helps improve oral posture, breathing patterns, and muscle function – all of which are deeply connected to jaw health.

While often used in orthodontics and sleep medicine, myofunctional therapy has a powerful role in reducing jaw pain, improving function, and preventing problems like teeth grinding and TMJ disorders.

Why Jaw Pain Happens

Jaw pain can be caused by:

  • Chronic teeth clenching or grinding (bruxism)

  • Poor tongue posture and oral habits

  • Stress-related jaw tension

  • Muscle imbalance or weakness

  • Previous dental work or orthodontic changes

When the muscles of the face and mouth are out of balance, the jaw has to work harder – leading to pain, tension, and even headaches.

How Myofunctional Therapy Helps Jaw Pain

By strengthening and retraining the oral and facial muscles, myofunctional therapy can:

  • Correct tongue posture (resting on the palate, lightly apart from teeth)

  • Improve swallowing patterns

  • Reduce clenching and grinding

  • Promote nasal breathing instead of mouth breathing

  • Balance the jaw and neck muscles

Julia’s Insight (Kieferfreund Founder): ‘Jaw pain isn’t just about the jaw — it’s about the whole system that supports it.’

Sample Myofunctional Therapy Exercises

Here are some gentle exercises you can start with today:

1. Tongue-to-Palate

Place the tip of your tongue just behind your upper front teeth, pressing gently on the palate (sucking up the tongue is even better!). Hold for 5–10 seconds, repeat 5 times.

2. Jaw Drop Relaxation

Let your jaw drop open slightly while keeping lips closed and shoulders relaxed. Breathe through your nose. Keep for 1–2 minutes.

3. Nasal Breathing Drill

Close your mouth, place your tongue on the palate, and breathe slowly through your nose for 2–3 minutes, focusing on relaxing the jaw. If you catch yourself mouth-breathing, gently come back to nose breathing.

These exercises are just the start — consistency and correct technique are key for lasting results. In our Free Kickstart program you will learn much more!

The Kieferfreund Approach

Kieferfreund takes myofunctional therapy to the next level with a holistic program that combines:

  • Guided tongue posture training (including the often-overlooked back third)

  • Jaw relaxation meditations for the nervous system

  • Emotional and subconscious support to address tension patterns

  • Integration with myofunctional exercises proven to improve jaw health

Our Jaw Meditation Add-On works hand-in-hand with the physical training, helping release mental stress that fuels jaw tension.

Why Tongue Posture Matters

Correct tongue posture is one of the most important – yet overlooked – aspects of jaw health. When the tongue rests on the palate instead of against the teeth or floor of the mouth, it:

  • Stabilizes the jaw

  • Reduces pressure on teeth

  • Supports balanced facial muscles

  • Encourages nasal breathing
